Western Georgia Samegrelo

 

This excursion is for those who are spending their holidays in Batumi or on black sea shore.

Zugdidi it’s a main city of the region Samegrelo situated in the western part of Georgia. Main attraction of the city is castle of Megrelian Lords Dadiani. This Surname Dadiani is old aristocratic one, known also for relationship with Napoleon Bonaparte! One of the members of Dadiani family was married to Napoleon Bonaparte cousin and due to this fact there are many thing of Napoleon kept in this museum.

                 

Here you can find more important relic shroud of Virgin Mary. The story goes that it was brought from Byzantium to Georgia by ancestors of Dadiani family in 15th century.

               

Estate of Dadiani’s Family is also famous for its gardens, prominent European gardeners were working on its design. Today Dadiani garden is known as Zugdidi botanical garden. It’s total area is 26 hectars and there are trees 200 and more years old, very rare ones. In Georgia some of them can oonly be found in this garden.

               

Not far from Zugdidi there is Martvili Canyon on river Abasha. We will have entertaining tour by bout into the canyon and later will visit Chkhondidi Monastery near Martvili built in 10th century. Here was the tomb of Dadiani Family. We’ll get to the monastery by cableway.

               

Also this day we’ll visit fortress-city Nokhalakhevi, also named as Arheopolis and sea port Poti. Main attraction of this city is cathedral built in Byzantine style.
